Today, when I switched on three of my computers all came up with: Windows Defender dialogue box 'Application failed to initialize: 0x800106ba. A Problem caused Windows Defender to stop.

Expired

To start the service, restart your computer or search Help and Support on how to start a service manually.' A PC restart didn't help and I checked the service, the Windows Defender service was disabled.

Even when I enabled it, on re-boot same error message. There is nothing abvout this on the M$ KB or anywhere else. I downloaded and re-installed it on one of my PCs and it now works OK. I suspect that M$ have done something and maybe this version was timed to expire at the end of the year? Does anyone know?

I expect lots of phone calls from my clients!:-(. '.M$ have messed up the Defender expiry, it disables the Windows Defender service which then causes the Windows-generated error message.' Microsoft did not mess up. They clearly define that the Windows Antivirus Beta 1 and Windows Defender Beta 2 were beta versions of AntiSypware software.

Support would be limited and the software itself would expire at a given time. On the Windows Defender Home page it has been alerting users that the Beta 2 would be expiring on Dec 31, 2006 and users need to upgrade. The software itself has been sending alerts for the past two weeks that it needs to be upgraded.

I myself have loaded this App on client’s computers and was aware of the expiration. When the alert for the new version came up I went out and updated all my clients’ workstations. I had a problem on two out of 18 workstations where the old beta 2 version did not uninstall and I had to download Windows Install Clean Up to remove them before installing the new release. Now I understand. I have come across numerous computers where Windows Defender has an icon in the tray with a message that a new version is available.

No one clicks on the icon and reads this because all the updates are supposed to be automatic. Except, that is, when there is a complete update when it just waits until the existing version has expired when it gives the message we have seen. Where users have seen this they have downloaded the new version and everything worked fine.

Sometimes I have downloaded this on their behalf, but never realised the logic, or lack of it, until now, always assuming it would be included in the Automatic Updates. This will obviously effect those who have ignored the notice to download the new version. MS are capable of getting Microsoft Update to install a new version of IE but not, so it appears, Defender. Nice one Bill:-(.

Thanks for this detailed information. I have had no problem uninstalling Windows Defender or simply re-installing the latest version in its place. I think it's time I closed this question. Thanks to all who responded or contributed to this thread.

War1 was the first to respond giving me the pointer to the specific expiry problem, so points go to him/her. I think we are all agreed that whilst it is beta software and we all know the risks it was not a very professional or sensible way for M$ to terminate it, clearly they made a mistake, beta or not!
